The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Nazar Kulchytskyy of UW-Oshkosh. Coming in as the #3 seed and the #3 ranked wrestler at 157, Kulchytskyy won the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational with a fall, a pair of major decisions, and a 2-1 win over the #1 ranked wrestler and returning NCAA 3rd place finisher at his weight, Elias Larson of Trine. Kulchytskyy is now 36-1 on the season and is the new #1 at 157 in the latest d3wrestle.com Rankings.

Kulchytskyy moved from the Ukraine to Wisconsin during high school and put his name on the map with a freestyle win over current University of Minnesota starter Dylan Ness in an off-season tournament. He then matriculated to Oshkosh where he was 12-0 last year in an injury shortened season. Healthy this year, he has run his career record to 48-1. He is ranked 5th in the latest NCAA listing of most dominant wrestlers as determined by team points per match, tied for 4th in most falls with 14, and tied for 2nd in most tech falls with 8. Kulchytskyy and the Titans next compete tonight in a WIAC match against UW-Platteville before taking on UW-Eau Claire on Friday and the Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday.

  1. Dustin Baxter should have won this award this week. He earned it. Kulchytskyy is a great wrestler, but maybe he should have been given the award AFTER the WIAC duals, not BEFORE. I thought this award was given out to wrestlers who had outstanding weeks.

  2. Larson was overrated if you ask me. Kulchytskyy was always the number one wrestler at that weight if you ask me. It was just a matter of time.

Maybe Baxter will get it this week. At the North Country, he pinned University of Minnesota’s freshman Alex Daugherty, then beat St Cloud State’s Chris Brassell.

In the finals, he lost a very close match to University of Minnesota’s Scott Schiller 6-5.

  3. Chaser, none of those guys are starters, let alone ranked in the nation. SCSU’s Chris Brassell, though very competitive, is nothign more than a really good back up. In fact, he is SCSU’s #3 behind Berg and Munk. Kulchytskyy deserved the award as he won one of the toughest mainly d3 tournaments in the country

  4. Chaser said “Larson was overrated if you ask me. Kulchytskyy was always the number one wrestler at that weight if you ask me.”

I’ve read these comments up and down and no one asked you your opinion on elias or nazar. If you watched the match, you would understand why nazar is wrestler of the week.
