Here is the first set of d3wrestle.com Rankings for the 2013-2014 season. A few notes before diving in. First, there are no freshmen or non-Division III transfers on this list. They will have the chance to get into future rankings. Second, if we have information that a wrestler will not be competing until the second semester, he will not be ranked until he actually wrestles. Additionally, the NWCA Rankings have also be released and can be found below.

Season outlook:
USMMA started the season a little differently than most schools, as their athletes spent October 10th dealing with the effects of a government shutdown that closed the school. They are back up and running now, and looking toward a successful 2014 season. NCAA qualifier Brandon Yeik returns at 157 and should be well-situated to return to the NCAA championship this year. Josh Miller was the #3 seed at the regional before finishing 6th, while Tyler Russell was 5th. Both return and hope to make the small improvements necessary to give the Mariners multiple qualifiers. This was also a good recruiting year for Merchant Marine, with 2x New England placewinner Mike Mui, National Prep runner-up Jack Walsh, 3x LA state champ Alexander Nicosia, and 2x AL champ Brian Walker all in the fold and eager to get going.

Season Outlook:
Wabash finished up a strong season last year with one All-American in Reece Lefever and the knowledge that nine of ten starters would be back in 2013-2014. With Lefever back to lead the way, the team should be able to have another good year and work to climb the national team rankings with a strong dual meet team. Four regional placewinners return, including the previously mentioned Lefever, as well as his brother Conner Lefever who was 4th and 5th place finishers Tim Locksmith and Austin O’Neal. With that many starters back, breaking into the lineup will be a challenge, but a strong freshman class could be up to the challenge and could see as many as three Lefevers in the lineup, as Fargo runner-up Riley Lefever will challenge for the nod at 184. With national qualifier Jake Strausbaugh gone to graduation, the fight for 149 will be contested by as many as five incoming wrestlers, giving the team a great chance to be solid from top to bottom and win a lot of duals.

Season outlook:
After a year as a club program, Ferrum moves up to varsity status for the first time since 1988 in 2013-2014. After a year of aggressive recruiting, the Panthers have a large roster made mostly of freshmen. A couple of wrestlers had good seasons for Ferrum last year including Darreus McCrea, a winner in the Division II bracket of the National Collegiate Open and Paul Biggs who placed third. The real future of the team lies in the incoming class featuring a trio of 3x Virginia placewinners Corbin Ramos, Sean Murphy, and Thomas Smith along with ODU transfer Dakota Thompson.

Season outlook:
With all three of their NCAA qualifiers back in the lineup this year, Waynesburg is poised to improve on last year’s strong team. It will take improvement around All-American Luke Lohr and qualifiers Sam Guidi and Anthony Bonaventura to make up for the loss of some starters to graduation. Lohr missed a big chunk of last year with an injury, so if he can put together a healthier season, he has the chance to be better than his 7th place finish a year ago. The team is counting on another strong season from team wins leader Sam Lombardo as well as improvement from incumbent starters Gordan Bieber and Jake Vitolo who will both be looking to get on the positive side of a .500 record this year. With seven starters back, the team should be in good shape, especially if some of the incoming freshmen can step into those open lineup spots, especially at 133 and 197.

Season outlook:
Concordia returns half of their six NCAA qualifiers and one of their All-Americans in 149 lb. Jake Long. They will look to replace 2012 All-American Nate Schmitz and 2x All-American Tom Bouressa. The replacement for Bouressa, however, is senior Cody Kasprick who has wins over three national qualifiers last year while backing up Bouressa. Kyle Leduc was edged in a late season wrestle off by NCAA qualifier Kevin Fynboh, but he did defeat Fynboh in an official match last season. He should slot right in at 157 and contend right away. One other change in Moorhead is Matt Nagel officially taking over as head coach after four years on staff. The Cobbers have had four straight years in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships and will hope to extend that streak to five while breaking into the top ten.

With as many as five lineup spots going to new wrestlers this season, it may take some time for the Wildcats to get their team sorted out this season. What is not changing is the presence of All-American 184 lb. wrestler Colin Lenhardt who returns in search of a higher finish in 2014. Also back for his sophomore campaign is Everet Desilets, the d3wrestle.com Freshman Team member at 157 lbs. Sean Prell and Joe Gaccione also both placed at the region last season and will look to do so again. JWU typically brings in a big recruiting class, and this year is no exception, which is good as they look to fill some holes in the lineup and compete in the NEWA and Northeast Region.

Season outlook:
Stevens returns three of four regional placewinners from last year’s team that won the Virginia Duals despite some injuries to important starters. Two time All-American Joey Favia has graduated, but East Region Outstanding Wrestler Mike Polizzi returns in search of his first All-American award. Also planning a return to the lineup this season is three time NCAA qualifier Ryan Dormann. Dormann was a qualifier in 2009, 2011, and 2012 and is also looking for his first trip to the second day at the NCAA Championships. With a number of former conference placewinners returning to the lineup this season and a big recruiting class in the fold, Stevens has a good chance to improve on last year’s finish both in dual meets and at the East Region.

The steady climb in the Iowa Conference and Nationally continued for the Central College (IA) Dutch last year. They reached #14 in the National Rankings while going 12-6 during the dual season. Sophomore 125 lb. Daniel Page represented Central College at the Div. III National Tournament and hopes to have an even better junior campaign with a podium finish. Returning starters Aaron Anderson (133), TJ Peretti (141), Sam Apland (174), and Tyler Lowy (184) bring back a strong core nucleus to continue the program’s ascension.

Season Outlook:
WPI will bring a lineup with some experience into 2013-2014 with as many as four senior starters. The team’s balance helped it place in the top half of multiple tournaments last season and finish the year with six regionally ranked wrestlers. Helping to bolster that experienced lineup are a pair of incoming freshman who each placed twice in the New England high school championships, especially likely 125 lb. starter Brian Amato. The team has come a long way in the last few years, and the hope is that 2013-2014 will be another big step in the right direction.

Season outlook:
After graduating a strong class that led Wesleyan to some of their greatest season in team history, the Cardinals look to a younger group to carry the torch in 2014. Josh Roometua finished a solid freshman campaign with a trip to the NCAA Championships and he will be aiming to improve on that finish this season. Classmate Jame Hamilton won 25 matches and beat at least one national qualifier during the season. Two wrestlers who could contribute this season are Ryan Sblendorio, who missed last year but placed in New England in 2012 and Chris Siracusa, a sophomore who had a winning record at 133 last year but may be 149 in 2014. With a lot of solid seniors graduating, there could be space in the lineup for some of the incoming class with 3x New England placewinner Devon Carrillo looking for time in the upper weights.

Season Outlook:
Ursinus College returns nine starters from last year’s Centennial Conference team champs, including four Centennial Conference individual champions and three runners-up. In addition to a solid recruiting class Ursinus adds two outstanding coaches to their staff; National Hall of Fame member, Jeff Bowyer and 2x NCAA Champion Seth Ecker (Ithaca) can only help the Bears get better. Chris Donaldson, 2013 semifinalist and 6th place finisher at 125 expects to step higher on the podium in Cedar Rapids while his teammates work to improve on last year’s performance at the 2013 East Region. Team depth is not a problem and the line-up should provide balance with over forty wrestles in the room. Season outlook:
The Spartans will be led by senior heavyweight Jason Pedigo. Pedigo has made steady improvements in his development and looks finish his career with a strong senior campaign. Sophomore 133-pounder Kalib Jackson was 16-12 last year but finished the season strong. Jackson is a dual-sport athlete and started the season late because of football. Through January and February he avenged several early losses and could be in the mix in the Midwest Regional. After losing five seniors to graduation last spring, Manchester will be green in 2013-2014. The Spartans will fill seven weights with freshmen. Despite their youth, this group of freshmen are talented and one of the best recruiting classes for Manchester in the last 4 years. Illinois state runner-up Rob Lane will highlights this group and will likely earn the spot at 149. There will be great competition at 165 and174 as the Lauffer, Floor, and Jones battle for starting roles. Indiana state qualifier Ty Webster will help solidify the top of the line-up as well.

Matt Zwaschka takes over for longtime coach Kevin Morin in 2013-2014, and he will have a lineup with some experience, minus the loss of last year’s national qualifier Austin Binish. A couple of former regional placewinners in Dallas Schurg and Pete Koostra are part of a veteran lineup. Caleb Staub missed last season but had 25 wins in 2012, while Nick Miceli was a conference champion last season and won 23 matches of his own. Illinois finalist Devin Mahnke is the top incoming wrestler, but Wisconsin placer Austin Bellile is there as well, along with a pair of qualifiers in Gross and Morzinsky.

New head coach Efrain Ayala is taking over the Oshkosh team after spending two years as an assistant with the Titans. The team is led by two time NCAA Champion and 2013 d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Year Nazar Kulchytskyy. He will be a heavy favorite to win a third title to close out his career. At the next weight up, two time qualifier Dan Schiferl will be going for his first All-American award after losing in the round of 12 last season. Tyler Wetenkamp and Brandon Clapper are also returning placewinners in the West Region. The incoming class is led by transfer Thomas Allen of MSU-Mankato, a former Wisconsin state champ who logged a win last year over the 2013 DIII champ at 149 Greg Sanders of Concordia.

Season outlook:
Centenary has had a great run the last three years, winning the Metropolitan Conference Championships twice, and winning the 2013 East Regional Championship. They finished 6th at the 2013 NCAA National Championships, and had a 3rd place team finish at the 2013 NWCA National Duals. Three time All-American Chris Burdge returns for one more season, though this will be his first at 165. Zachary Huxford is the other returning qualifier who was in the round of 12 last year. A few 2012 starters missed last season due to injury, so they could help replace some of the now graduated starters from 2013. A freshman class with five state qualifiers and three placewinners will also be counted on to provide depth.

Season outlook:
With both of last year’s NCAA finalists gone, Ithac will look to returning All-American Alex Gomez and qualifier Dominick Giacolone to lead the team in 2014. Two very strong transfers will bolster the lineup in NJCAA All-American Kris Schimek and Campbell transfer Joe Rizzolino. Incoming freshman and New York state champion Carlos Toribo may step right in at 174 after the departure of national runner-up Jules Doliscar. It will be a mix of old and new faces in the Ithaca lineup, but the level of talent appears to be quite high.

Coach Bastress will rely on national qualifiers Joey Giaccio and Chuck Glatz to help lead this year’s squad along with a solid core of returners from last year’s team. Season outlook:
With 5 returning qualifiers, Luther is set up for a good year. Evan Obert is the only returner of their three 8th place finishers from last season, but Jayden DeVilbiss and Garrett Bonte each made the round of 12 last season, while Connor Herman did so in 2012. Dakota Gray and Nick Scheffert each finished fourth in the Central Regional and are both back hungry to make the next step to the national tournament. With nine state placewinners in the incoming class, Luther is reloading to stay competitive in the IIAC and Central Region.

Season outlook:
After finishing 8th for their highest finish since 1998, Springfield returns in 2013-2014 with a pair of All-Americans looking to lead the team back into the top ten. Derek Adams was unseeded but fought all the way back to fourth place, avenging losses earlier in the season to two different opponents. The bigger surprise for the Pride was Devin Biscaha winning the title at 157. Biscaha was unseeded and did not even win his region, but he beat the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seeds on his way to the title. Both Biscaha and Adams return along with 125 lb. qualifier Tommy Casper. With six starter lost to graduation, the incoming freshmen will be leaned on heavily to help the team to future success.
