The IIAC finished last night, and Wartburg won its 18th straight IIAC title, fending off Coe by 9.5 points.  Five teams each had two champions, while Wartburg and Coe each qualified all ten to the NCAA Tournament, setting up a three way showdown including Augsburg in two weeks.  Josh Terrell won the Outstanding Wrestler award after beating the #1 and #2 ranked wrestlers in the country on his way to the title.  Central’s Eric Van Kley and Cornell’s Mike Duroe shared the Coach of the Year award.  See below for results

  1. They only had three wild cards. There’s just too much depth in the IIAC to spend two of them on one weight class (i.e., 4th and 5th at 125). I thought the d3 prediction on that was wrong, and I was correct. However, I agree with you. Mogg may be better — I think he is — but Hood beat him in the qualifier, and what’s the point of having a qualifying tournament if they’re going to take losers over winners? They should not have spent a wild card on Mogg without taking the guy that beat him as well.

  2. The qualifying tournament is for guys to punch their ticket to nationals. If you don’t finish in the top three, then the wild card is a reward for the season you had and the quality competition you beat. Neither Mogg nor Hood were good enough to finish in the top three. So when you look at their records and who they beat, Mogg had a better resume. That’s the way it goes. The iowa conference coaches have a history of leap frogging guys who have had better seasons, but may have taken a bad loss that day. And for the record, they are usually correct.

  3. hmm i dont know if i agree that mogg had a better resume. hood beat norton, bastante, and a few other ranked kids and contenders. also, tho mogg had a better win/loss %, cornell wrestled a tougher schedule this year than bv

  4. Honestly i’m not sure who had the better resume, but the Iowa Conference coaches sure seemed to like Mogg’s better so I’ll defer to them.
