Fleming out at B-W

Rich Fleming, the coach at Baldwin-Wallace for the past 23 seasons, will not be the head coach for the 2011-2012 season. The school quietly posted an opening for the job a few weeks ago while also upping it to a full time position. No announcement was ever made on the school website announcing the search or the fact the Fleming will not return, other than the listing on the B-W employment site. Fleming was not granted an interview, so the Yellow Jackets will have a new head coach next season. Phone interviews were to have been conducted last week with several candidates, followed, one would assume, by on campus interviews in the coming weeks. As soon as any more information is available, you will find it here on d3wrestle.com.

In 23 seasons at the helm of the B-W program, Fleming coached 34 NCAA qualifiers and 10 All-Americans, including 1989 NCAA champion Kevin Higgins.

  1. BW also did not grant awards to their two assistant coaches in Bryan Kmetz (two time NCAA qualifier and NCAA runner up)or Joe Heiland (two time NCAA qualifier and rising star in the world of MMA) either of the two would have helped BW and set them in a great direction. Its hard to see what the administration is trying to do with the team…

  2. I agree with the above post. The way the whole situation has/is being handled is just wrong. It’s unfair to not give Coach Fleming an interview since he has been the head coach at the school for over two decades. Also, BW had their best season in years, with notable wins at John Carroll and over Heidelberg. And the two assistant coaches not getting phone interviews? What a joke.

  3. Coach Fleming is a great coach and deserved that job (at least an interview. The AD at BW is obviously clueless to do what he did. Coach Heiland and Coach Kmetz would have served that position very well. just another letdown at bw

  4. Well this is interesting. I applied for the job before it’s closing and never got a response. I called in reference to the job and the secretary stated that they were suppose to be conducting phone interview next week. That was last week so I didn’t get contacted. I guess menas I didnt’ get the job. Would have been nice to get some kinda notification.

  5. Re: Interested Coach

In the real world you rarely get any response to your job requests unless they actually interview you.

  6. Terrible! I’d never send my kid to BW after hearing of this! This is how they treat loyal, dedicated employees?
