Former Division III wrestlers Blake Gillis (Wartburg) and Terry Madden (Hunter) placed in the Sunkist International Open this past weekend in Phoenix. Gillis was 2nd at 120kg and Madden was 3rd at 74kg. Madden dropped a 2-0,2-0 decision to eventual champ Mike Poeta in the semifinals before defeating current Pitt wrestler (and son of Waynesburg coach Ron Headlee) Ethan Headlee for 3rd. Gillis defeated former Division II and Midlands champ Les Sigman in the quarterfinals and current Iowa State heavyweight David Zabriskie in the semifinals before losing to former Penn State wrestler and NCAA runner-up Aaron Anspach in a three period bout in the finals.
Great to see Terry working up to his early potential at the weight, give him a few more months and he will take nationals at the 74kg!
Don’t know if this interests anyone, but Waynesburg assistant coach Drew Headlee competed and placed fifth at 60 KG Freestyle.
Ah ha.That really interests me.
